Most steel in South Africa is produced and consumed in Gauteng. South Africa is regarded as one of the cheaper steel producers globally. The stainless steel industry is currently growing at 12-12,5% per year, outpacing other countries. South Africa is ideally positioned for ferrochrome production, which feeds the manufacture of stainless steel. There is only one producer of stainless steel in South Africa. South Africa is one of the top 10 primary producers of aluminium in the world. The value of the industry in Gauteng is worth around US$20 million. The aluminium industry is involved in primary production and beneficiation. Products include secondary processing (such as foils, cans, bars, rods and sheets) and final fabrication (die-casting and sheet metal work). In South Africa, secondary aluminium production – which encompasses semi-fabricated products such as sheet, plate, foil, rod, bar and wire, extrusions and pressings – currently makes up about 38 000 tons per annum. The industry capacity is currently set at about 50 000 tons per annum. |
