1.1 LED DEPARTMENT BUSINESS UNITS
The LED Department is comprised of the following business units:
Local Government Support- is mainly responsible for supporting local governments in their endeavor to develop and implement LED strategies and programmes that are aligned to the Integrated Development Plans. During the 2007/08 financial year the department continued to ensure the development of LED strategies in all the identified municipalities. It is envisaged that in 2008/2009 financial period, the department will assist the municipalities on the implementation of LED strategies and resuscitation and sustainability of identified LED projects.
Urban Renewal/Regeneration Project – facilitates and supports the implementation of LED component of Urban Renewal Projects to ensure optimal utilisation of resources and avoid white elephants. This will be done in conjunction with the Gauteng Department of Housing. |
Organized Business Support - economic development could never be attained if there is a lack of robust and aggressive private sector. It has always been noted that South Africa in general does not have many people who are entrepreneurial orientated, particularly within the previously disadvantaged communities. The LED Department will continue to assist organized business formations and assist in the formation of such in places where they do not exist. The business unit should also in conjunction with other business units like research appraise the benefits accrued from economic hubs to local organized business. The Organized Business Support will spearhead the implementation of IDZ business plan at OR Tambo International Airport. It will also manage the established Gauteng Exporters Advisory Council. |
Economic Hubs- Are targeted at benefiting second economy sector and act as catalyst for broader socio-economic development within target communities.
