On behalf of the Gauteng Provincial Government and the people of Gauteng, welcome to Africa’s world-class city region.

Gauteng is South Africa’s economic engine room and the African continent’s foremost city region. We generate over a third of South Africa’s gross domestic product and have the country’s highest per capita income.
The sustained economic growth we have achieved over many years is thanks to the sound economic and social policies we have implemented since the advent of democracy in our country in 1994. We have built a strong, stable and competent government which has upheld the principles of good governance, accountability and transparency.

We have a track record of consistent delivery and steady progress in addressing the socio-economic needs of our people.

We have increasingly attracted the attention of investors, multi-national companies seeking an entry into Africa, professionals, innovators, entrepreneurs, tourists and others who wish to be part of Gauteng’s economic success story. They want to take advantage of the growing economic opportunities Gauteng has to offer and experience the province’s dynamism, warmth and diversity.

As you visit business precincts, tourist attractions, towns and cities, you will see evidence of our progress in making Gauteng a better place in which to live, work and do business. We are investing billions of rands in strategic economic infrastructure, skills development and other measures to boost business tourism, ICT, manufacturing, transport and logistics and other economic sectors.

We are currently building the Gautrain rapid rail link, which is Africa’s biggest infrastructure project and public private partnership. It will link Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni, Tshwane and the OR Tambo International Airport and form the backbone of our integrated transport system.

Preparations to host the FIFA World Cup in 2010 have provided massive impetus to infrastructure development and business in general in Gauteng. We have three of the ten official match venues in our province and are proud to be hosting the opening and the finals.

We are taking steps to further improve the cost and ease of doing business in Gauteng. We want to give potential investors easy access to reliable information and other assistance in making the right investment decisions. We hope this guide provides some of the information you require. In addition, our specialist agencies, the Gauteng Economic Development Agency (GEDA), Blue IQ and the Gauteng Tourism Authority (GTA) are there to serve you.
